Hey. They're not really the same thing... it's a good question. Let's start with one issue. The way you use up to date above is not as a compound adjective and so you can't add the dashes ------. See this Google comment: Is it up to date or up-to-date? Hyphenate as a compound modifier before a noun: We bring you the most up-to-date news. Otherwise, no hyphen Now the meaning... Up-to-date describes the current condition. Updated also describes the current condition, but indicates that there was a previous version to which something has been done so that it is now more up-to-date. I've been trying to keep up to date with all the statistics... I've ensured that my staff are updated daily as to changes... (assume there was a previous moment in which they knew less than the most current) The second example of yours is therefore bad... So, you can say TO KEEP UP TO DATE WITH SOMETHING... or TO KEEP SOMEONE UP TO DATE WITH SOMETHING... I would stick to these examples: your second example "When you are updated "on" your work, offer to help others with theirs" doesn't work either unfortuntaly because of the problem mentioned above. The words are not restricted to knowledge. There are lots of uses of these words. Both of your examples are odd from a meaning point of view, because ‘statistics’ (by itself) isn’t something that requires updates! Examples: I’m up to date with my Covid boosters. (Not ‘on’, not ‘updated’) I’ve updated the draft to reflect your concerns. (Changed it) Keep me updated on/with your progress. (Both are ok but I prefer ‘on’) Everyone’s up-to-date on the latest sales figures. (Not ‘with’) Otherwise ‘with’ and ‘on’ can have different meanings. I’m up-to-date with the newest iPhone. = I’m up-to-date because I have the newest iPhone. Stay up to date on the latest news. Stay up to date with the NY Times app. (Using it) When you are caught up with/on your work, help Jack. (Both prepositions sound ok)

The first one, "up-to-date", is a normal adjective (I'm not sure about Portuguese, but in Spanish it would be están actualizados). In the second one, we have "updated" used as a verb participle to form the passive voice (Spanish "se actualizan", or occasionally "son actualizados").
