Here's a tip: If you're talking about a specific time something happened, we usually use an article:
"I met AJS in the morning on Tuesday"
"I'll be meeting my parents for dinner this evening"
"My birthday party is this afternoon, I hope you can come"

It depends. We say "in THE morning, in THE evening, in THE afternoon".
But for greetings, we just say "Good evening", "morning", "good afternoon".
