Another crew member: (distorted static continues... ) That would be an echo. The instruments took a lot of damage.
Would it sound better to say ‘must' instead of 'would'? Any differences?

I'd say the difference is the amount of certainty you have, so to speak. Must indicate more and would less. By using would you are just guess whereas by using must you have something that indicates it could be what you are thinking of
