Character is the foundation of all skills. The other day, we interviewed a very strong candidate. He performed so well during the interview that the three of us decided we wanted him to join our team immediately afterwards. However, our HR department carried out some background checks and discovered that he had serious ethical issues. Although he is married, he would add attractive female colleagues on social media and ask them out. That made us decide to reject his application. Even though he was knowledgeable, a strong critical thinker, and fluent in Spanish which were all qualities we were looking for we decided not to hire him. Skills can be taught, but people rarely change who they are.
