Hi. The verb ‘elected’ in this sentence is a transitive verb (complex transitive).
They = subject
Elected = verb
Him = direct object
President = object complement / predicative
Linking verbs cannot be followed by a direct object, therefore since this sentence contains one it must be transitive.
