A year ago, I took the leap to live abroad as a digital nomad. While the lifestyle is exciting, it's not as glamorous as social media often shows. Here are 10 lessons I’ve learned in my first year:
Wi-Fi is your lifeline – Reliable internet is crucial. Consider local SIM cards and VPNs if you work in public spaces.
Fight loneliness – It’s easy to feel isolated. Schedule regular catch-ups with friends/family to stay connected.
Create a routine – Even on the road, having a routine brings stability, like dedicating Mondays to laundry.
Things don’t go as planned – Flexibility is key. Give yourself room for changes in schedule and budget.
Allow yourself homesick days – It’s okay to miss home. Sometimes a “local day” helps, but an “American day” can feel good too.
Prepare for rainy days – Build savings for unexpected events or slow periods in work.
Join local expat networks – These groups are invaluable for navigating life abroad and staying connected.
Don’t compare yourself to others – Social media shows only the highlights. Embrace both the adventures and the quieter moments.
Know your legal stuff – Taxes, visas, and local laws are boring but necessary. I worked with an immigration lawyer to simplify the process.
This may be temporary – Whether I settle or keep moving, I’m learning to enjoy the adventure without pressure.
