Why does the sentence "They met for the first time" require "for" but "The exercise worked the second time" does not?

If you say "The exercise worked for the second time", then this means that the exercise also worked for the first time.
By saying "The exercise worked the second time", it sounds as though you are saying that the first time the exercise was tried, it did not work.
