I made a qq account, but when I try to add a friend or join a group I get an error and there's no way of resolving it as they ask you for the "chinese real name authentication app". Is there a way to fix this?

Oh, I didn't know we have this rule.
But I heard there is a special version of QQ for international users. Maybe you can try that?
