Everything had a battered, trampled-on look, as though the place had just been visited by some large violent animal What is the meaning of battered and trampled-on look here?

"battered" - beaten, hurt or damaged. "trampled-on" - crushed - as if an elephant had stepped on it. So, it's saying that everything looked like it was damaged, especially by a large animal.
