Can the cross in the text be changed to through?

Yes. Many other prepositions will also work: for, during, over, of, and probably more. I think "across" is the best choice though because it is the one that emphasizes that that period is finished. It has been "crossed".

I suppose so, but (in British English anyway), I'd say 'over'.
