Although we make statements about our jobs with the verb 'be', we don't ask the question with 'be'.
What do you DO (for a living)?
I AM a teacher.
What does your father DO (for a living)?
He IS an engineer.
You can add 'for a living' to the question if you wish but it is unnecessary.
