What’s the difference between ‘nature reserve’ and ‘nature preserve’?

In my area there are both, without obvious differences. I don’t think there is any standardization of the meanings but to my ear ‘preserve’ suggests a slightly higher level of protection.

They mean the same thing, though it is more common to say Nature Reserve. It refers to a protected area with flora, fauna or particular geological features
