What general approach should we adopt in reading literary works, especially the Western Canon and Great Book? Although most of us might not be as keen as literary critics, we are encouraged to apply the critical thinking and analytical skills we have developed. On the other hand, we certainly do not wish to strip the writing down to the bare bone. Thanks.

When I took a Lit. class, it wasn't so rigid or focused on one "correct" meaning as long as you engage with the text (do you find metaphors, irony, subtext, situations in your own life you can relate it to?) and are able to form a coherent idea around it. It was common to discuss people's differing interpretation without judgement, as long as they weren't wildly irrelevant. Hope that helps.
