Even though your first sentence begins with 今日は, you cannot translate this directly. You can translate 今日は金曜日 or 今日は昭和の日 as “Today is XXX”, but if it is not the name of a day or a holiday, you cannot . For example, 今日は防火訓練の日should be “There is a fire drill today”.
