We usually use this word in front of the subject as well as object .This word is worked as to define and modify the words that go after 的 .The usual structure would be adjective 、nouns or pronouns +的+nouns .Eg: 她是一个漂亮的女孩。

Hi Luke, Generally it’s used when you’re talking about “the ___ one”, eg: 紅色的 the red one 桌子上的 the one on the table 我媽媽的 my mum’s But it was also be used optionally where it would also be correct to omit it.
