All three of the verbs in your examples are in the Simple Past tense. The first clause in the second sentence ("when he was dressed") is in the Passive voice, but it's still the Simple Past tense.

Both are just the past tense with the past participles "used" and "dressed" as predicate adjectives. "Used to spiders" means familiar or accustomed to spiders through experience. Why it means that is something I will not attempt to explain because I have no idea.
