Ann
Hi there, how do you memorize new words? I would be grateful if you could share your experience with me. Because I have to commute two hours to work ( from a city to another), so I have plenty of time on subway and train. In order to make the most of the time, I normally try to memorize the english words that I recently learned, but the thing is that I quickyly forget the words which I memorized a couple of days ago. Do you have any effective memorization way? Thanks alot.

You could try a flashcards app, such as Anki, to help you memorise new vocabulary. That works for me and I usually recommend such tools to my English students!

Hello Ann, There is a method called spaced memorization; it consists of revising your vocabulary with increasing time intervals. For example, you've just learned a few new words today, you are going to revise them tomorrow, then 2 days after, then 5 days after, then a week after and so on. It’s a method that helps you see words which you find difficult to memorize more often and it also helps you stimulate your long-term memory. You have phone applications that can help you set your own spaced memorization system. I can't advertise here so if you have any questions feel free to contact me in private message. Take care Ann, see you later.

Hi Ann. First of all, well done for wanting to increase your vocab. You’ve already received some good replies here. It’s an interesting question as everybody learns in different ways. I find I remember things better when I write them down. I also believe in learning in context. Just trying to memorise 50 random words is difficult. So I try to have a different topic each time and as Leigh already said, write any new words into a longer sentence so they have context. Maybe on your commute, look out the window or around the carriage. Look at what you see. Write the words down on your language, then go online and find the English words. You should hopefully remenber them better because you will be learning each one in context and you can remenber what you’ve seen with your eyes each time you meet these words again

Hi, the method Pierre mentioned it's good and effective, and it's science based so it's good to give it a try. Combine it with flashcards, you can use just regular paper and pencil to create them or you can use app designed to this task. As you have plenty of time during commuting, I recommend to you to create every flashcard by yourself. The process of creating your flashcard helps you to remember the world. It's also good to experiment with different types of flashcards, rather than using just a translation of the word or phrase you want to remember, use a synonyms, pictures or definition written in the language you're learning. It's also good to create a personal connection with the word. It's easier to forget that cat is a cat, but if you connect the word "cat" with your sweet and little ball of fur named "Mr. Cuddles" it should be easier for you to remember that word.

My suggestion is to write the new words in a meaningful sentence.
