Is "schmaltz" the same as "emotion"? What are some common collocations with this word?

"Schmaltz" is actually a german word for fat that one might spread on bread. It's not used very often. The adjective form 'schmaltzy' is slightly more common. A good synonym would be maudlin (look that one up).
"I didn't like that movie - it was a tear-jerker . . . too schmaltzy for me."

This word is very old.
Nobody uses it anymore.
The only reason I know it is from an obscure song lyric.
