He asked me HOW I WAS. (reported speech, backshifted, no question mark)
I'd definitely backshift this to WAS (unless reporting it immediately, in which case I might be tempted by AM - He's asking me how I am!)
Or, "How are you?" he asked me. (direct speech, question mark)
Surely this would be the correct grammar?
