Talking about male clothing. What's the difference between "shorts" and "knickers"? Yesterday a nigerian customer asked for a pair of knickers. It took me a while to understand that he wanted a pair of shorts. I've always tought that "knickers" was female underwear. Can anyone tell me if there's any difference between these two words or if they're just synonyms?

I'm not sure of all the nuances, but I can tell you that they don't even mean the same thing in the US and England. So, who knows what they mean in other countries. Actually, in the US, you'd be unlikely to hear 'knickers' at all. So, I guess the answer may depend on the location.
