Ciao! Come tradurreste "dues" in italiano?
La frase è: Italian, for her, was an entirely learned language. “Nothing came to me naturally; I had to pay MY DUES,” she writes.

È un po' tarde ma....To pay one's dues significa letteralmente "pagare i tuoi debiti". Ma quando si usa in modo figurato significa "faticare". Non solo fatica ma anche tempo. La frase "Nothing came to me naturally, I had to pay my dues" significa che "imparare l'italiano non è stato facile per me, dovevo faticare ad imparare la lingua".
