What tools are you using for learning via web?

Hello out there,

I am learning languages (english, spanish and russian) on the web since seven month and I am not really happy with the results. And I think that the key factor why it does not work the false selection of tools is.

So I would like to initiate a discussion about, which tools are you using and how do you use them. Simply talking with a guy from another country seems not to be working. I would be happy to get a lot of ideas for my problem.

Thank you in advance and

Greetings

Matthias

I recommend following a course book suitable for your level, and diligently doing all the exercises. If you are able to get some speaking practice, if possible, focus on the topics in the course book in a systematic way.  Course books are usually written by highly experienced teachers, sometimes by a team of them, and are designed for systematic learning.

Hi Matthias :-)
I think the choice of the tools depends on your starting level and on your goals.
For example, if my goal for the English language is to pass the PET test (level b1),  I will do a lot of demo test at that level, I will have to refine grammar, and so on.
But if I'm simply going to visit France, and I've never studied french before, I will only need lo learn some common and useful words and sentences to survive and enjoy the trip, so I can use whatever tool out there (busuu, babbel, duolingo, etc) because they cover very well the needs of tourists and absolute beginners.

I am also learning Russian. I wouldn't say all my learning is online, but I use the computer a lot, especially for notes. I use the Memrise app on my mobile phone to build vocabulary. I read different books both in electronic and paper format for understanding grammar and how to put the language together. I listen to MP3s of the language and try to watch YouTube videos in the language. I also exchange short messages with people I meet here on italki or on other sites, so that I can read and write. I read headlines on news websites, and try to read a sentence or two. And when I want to test myself in an area of language, I book a tutor here.
