Poetry analysis

If you are fluent in English, tell me please, how would you comment on this piece of poetry by Alexander Blok?

<em>A night, a street, a lamp, a drugstore</em>
<em>A meaningless and dismal light</em>
<em>A quarter century outpours —</em>
<em>It’s all the same. No chance to flight.</em>

<em>You’d die and rise anew, begotten.</em>
<em>All would repeat as ever might:</em>
<em>The street, the icy rippled water,</em>
<em>The store, the lamp, the lonely night.</em>

A.A. Blok, 1912

I'm not a poet or an English major, but I love reading poetry, so thanks for posting it.  It is wonderful.

This poem has a depressing, hopeless feeling.  It is a freezing, possibly rainy (rippled water) dark night. All of the stores are closed. The light doesn't comfort, it just further illuminates the lonliness of the scene.

Even in 25 years, it will be the same.  There is no reason to try to change the world or to change your life, because it will alwys end up being dark, cold, lonley.

Maybe it can show how at the end of your life, no matter how much you have accomplished, no matter how vigorously you lived and loved, it doesn't matter. You die alone and cold.

What do you think the poem means?

I don't quite understand... did he write in English, or is this a translation?

Apparently it's a translation. That complicates things! Two other (different) translations are posted here:

One of them is:

The night. The street. Street-lamp. Drugstore.

A meaningless dull light about.

You may live twenty-five years more;

All will still be there. No way out.

You die. You start again and all

Will be repeated as before:

The cold rippling of a canal.

The night. The street. Street-lamp. Drugstore.

The main thing that strikes me about the poem is the depth of pessimism suggested by the idea that <em>even if you die and are re-incarnated</em>, nothing will change and nothing will be any better.

DIDI, what do you know about the Russian character, Russia and her culture?

We, Russians, are deeply in tune with our cultural heritage. Do what many Russians do: discover classic literature, attend museums, and read poetry.

Don’t let the weather affect you. Does the weather rule your mood? We, Russians, seem impervious to weather changes. Sure, we like our warm summer days, but our brains and trains continue to function no matter what happens. Whether the world boils or becomes a frozen ball, Russia will keep going.

A Gallup poll showed that Americans are one of the most stressed out nations in the world; meanwhile, Russians are the least stressed country in Europe. Be a Russian: brush off imperfection.

Reading Russian history is like watching a tennis ball bang around a washing machine. We have had many tough times. Unlike a lot of other countries, Russia has had some serious invaders practically break them. Swedes, French, and Germans all tried to stab Russia’s heart, Moscow. We, Russians, endured history’s deadliest siege (Leningrad), deadliest battle (Stalingrad), and deadliest invasion (Operation Barbarossa). We just don’t give up. Moreover, we stay united even after civil wars and economic trauma. The two greatest virtues of Russians are loyalty and resolve. When you’re facing tough times, think of Russia, stay strong, and keep going.

"Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.", wrote our bitterest enemy Winston Churchill.

"Russia cannot be understood with the mind alone, no ordinary yardstick can span her greatness: she stands alone, unique—in Russia, one can only believe.", wrote the Russian poet (and diplomat) Fyodor Tyutchev.

It shows the characters of Russian depression. People who learn it often discuss why russian like it from history.

Because that is not only reflected on poem. On music they like use depressing feeling let people cant breath. It is basic feeling from deep idology. It is like sear going into the national history. It is not about how they happy now, So the author may not be so sad just got bored to sing up the poem.

Sorry to describe it on these words but you can analysis how is it in the state,  It is also beautiful like epic to unfold the pome.It is interesting to study on it due like analysis always need object.

And can know how the author realized the idea of priori logic from experience and have the idea like transmigration. It often happened on a nation’s long history of cause you should know you are in the his-tory so that is why connected you.
