What can I do if a boy says "Happy new year" who was my classmate two years ago to me?

Should I reply? What should I say exactly? If I say "The same to you"... well I know it's not a wrong answer but there were some matter between us since he were too friendly to me.

Can you give me some advice? Thanks.
