What are the most dangerous aspects of tourist industry
(An essay on negative issues of tourist industry)

Contemporary tourism has changed a lot since its beginning in the 19th century. The amount of tourists in the world is growing every year, which could endanger the world wonders. Although the monuments have a certain level of protection, many holidaymakers are quite thoughtless and irresponsible.

One major disadvantage of modern tourism is commercialization of tourist sights. The more famous the place becomes, the more tourists it attracts and the growing number of tourists could endanger the monuments. This increase of visitors requires improvement of the infrastructure. Therefore new highways, hotels, shopping centres and other facilities are built in a close neighbourhood of historical buildings or natural reservations. Developers usually invest a lot of money in their projects but not in the environment. They are often taking shortcuts and ignoring regulations to cut expenses. Unfortunately, even many politicians care more about profit and personal gains than about the environment and cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the mass tourism has a negative impact on the traditional culture and appearance of the location. Tourists do not always respect customs and traditions of local people and their behaviour might not be appropriate to the place and situation. By neglecting rules they can cause forest fires, destroy sandstone rocks and increase pollution.

On the other hand, more visitors mean more money for the destination. A lot of local services are dependent on travel expenditures by foreigners. Moreover tourism provides direct employment for local inhabitants. Thanks to it, the average standard of living is on the increase.

In conclusion there are many aspects of tourist industry, which endanger our cultural and natural heritage. Unfortunately the main threat is not the tourism itself, but unconcerned tourists and disrespectful municipalities. As I see it, we should reconsider the way we treat the environment and improve our behaviour.
