A country's culture influences and shapes the language. However, while language can be studied from books, a fun way to study both language and culture is by watching movies. Here are 7 curated Russian films that can help you better understand both the Russian language as well as Russian people and their culture.

What a weird comment from Andy.

You could have said that you prefer movies about MODERN Russia, it would work and you wouldn't offend anyone. And your opinion about Russians sound very... shallow.

Russians are different. Especially those from the younger generation. We all live in a globalized world, it's natural that younger Russians tend to follow Western habits and so on.

What you have mentioned, Andy, is more about politics and the structure of the sociaty.

It could have been Russian mentality (and it probably is so) that has led to this type of society, but still, it is not "real Russia" - just like real Russia is not about vodka, bears and cold winters.

The article is a good one - the author suggests good classic movies that really shed some light on how Russians feel and react. Some people don't like classical movies and refuse to watch them - oh well, it's not the author's problem, okay? Just walk away if you don't like it. But don't fool yourself thinking that you have seen the Russian soul and typical characters just because you are following the news about politics.

Modern Russian movies, by the way, are often just lame attempts to copy Westerb style. Not all of them are bad, but the good ones mostly show young people living in a big city. You can figure out how much of the Russian spirit can be found there. Nope, just some modern Russians. It would be hard to spot typical RUSSIAN features watching these kind of movies.

Seriously Andy, don't embarrass yourself :) This is not that kind of platform.

Svetlana, thank you for suggestions. They are old Russian classics and I know very few people who haven't watched most of them. You know New Year is coming when you see these on TV!

Thank you Svetlana for this interesting list of Russian movies. I look forward to seeing them. I really liked the bilingual text, which really helped my reading comprehension. I took your advice as you told me in class to focus on just reading in Russian before cheating and going straight for the translation. I also like your writing style in both languages and your level of English is excellent.

More intersting translation of the"С легким паром!" - "The Souna Blues".

I think, all movies of Ryazanov are the clue to the "Russian Soul".  But the 7 movies are not the 7 days to make the world.
