What does your hair mean to you?

Recently I end up a traumatic friendship with someone I really like, and I swear it was the so-called "love at the first sight". I naively presumed he was actually my soul mate but somehow he left me...

After a one-month depression I went to cut my long hair which had already reached my waist. But I didn't think much. The fact is: I shaved my head.

Frankly speaking, I don't care how strangers look at me as if I were sick or something like that. All of a sudden I start to ponder on the meaning of hair.

I would love to hear your opinions on this topic: what does your hair mean to you?

I think dramatically changing your appearance can feel like turning a new leaf. You see a different person in the mirror, and maybe the feelings will be different too. Sometimes these external changes can make a big difference inside.

I guess beards count as hair? Believe it or not I can relate to your experience: in high school I had a pretty decent beard, and one day I shaved it all off in a fit of rage and self-loathing. Sounds funny now, but it was incredibly cathartic at the time!

Probably most men like me would say hair matters less to them than it does to women...ask them again when they're balding.

PS. Your posts about your Iran trip are AMAZING!!!!

@Hediyeh_Eastanbul - Bald chicks are hot. I lived in Africa for a few years. When I first arrived I though the women were ugly, and I finally realized they weren't. They were just bald. After I got used to their baldness, I also realized that they were just are pretty as hairy women. I'm bald too, so I no longer worry about it. Too lazy to shave though; I guess that's the next step.

It's difficult to describe but when something is wrong in my life it's one of the first things I will drastically change; either the colour or length. In a way it's like a control thing; it's something you have control over that is a huge part of what other people see when they look at you. So in a way , sometimes when I change my hair I think I subliminaly think I have control over how other people percieve me or am fighting against their judgements or something?

Maybe the answer of this question depends on how to define your identity.

In this world, woman behave as an woman because they are required to behave as an woman.

Appearance(including hair) is the one which define the identity at some extent.

However, people can find the part of themselves without concerning this world.

The inner beauty of the person is the part they find by themselves.

To change hair style can give you the chance which of your part is defined by society.

By the chance, if you can find the inner beauty ,to cut hair is meaningful for you.

I personally don’t put too much meaning into my hair, even though I try to take care of it. However, I like cutting my hair by myself. Maybe it has to do with control, but in my case it feels more like I have control over myself, rather than having control ver the way others perceive me. But I haven’t done anything drastic.
Traditionally hair plays a big part for women’s beauty, so this kind of changes sounds to me a little like a type of a self-harm. I hope this is not the case. However, a new haircut always feels renewing.

ELIZABETH-ANNE, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things get better soon.
