Why do American and Brits spell words differently?

Living languages evolve and change over time. English in the UK and in the US have been evolving and changing independently of each other for hundreds of years. Portugal and Brazil speak different variants of Portuguese and the same is true of Spanish in Spain and in Latin American countries.

It's because their culture probably. They also tend to use different words to describe the same object. In US it's gas, and in UK they used petroleum
