I don't believe literature in different languages can be compared as a kind of competition. Any language, any culture has different views of things and feelings.

I couldn't choose between XIX century russian realism, french literature, british, Spanish or american literature in XX century. Each of them contribute with great different aspects of culture and visions of people and society.

In general I really hate that kind of patriotic visions of culture. According to my experience those who usually brag about having the "best" literature, or any other art are usually people fairly poor in terms of culture.

The richest literature....is the one which is read and not only talked about.

Who still reads literature? After graduating from high school? Does anybody on this thread know a little bit of the literature of his country ? I doubt. Maybe the Iranians who have a real devotion for poetry.

Unfortunately, I am quite ignorant of many cultures' literature. Of those I know, I would read Arabic literature for its beauty, German literature for its insightfulness, French literature for its humor and playfulness, Chinese literature for its reflectfulness, Russian literature for its pathos and depth, and English and American literature for its clarity and creativity.

I do. Mostly Russian literature. And I don't think I'm all that special in this respect.
