I would prefer to say that "failure COULD be the mother of invention."

It simply depends on the person's reaction to failure.

Do they get discouraged and give up, or do they learn from their mistakes and carry on towards their goal?

Not always.

It has happened to me that after a failure I get frustrated and I stop doing something because I do not find it rewarding and I feel it is not worth keeping on doing that because I won't be able to achieve a particular thing.

Not always. Sometimes,  it's a mother of depression which in turn a mother of suicide.

Sorry.
