Color Blind or Color brave

Hi everone,

I have a question and I'll be very glad if you can help me with this sentence. "Color Blind or Color Brave"

Firstly, I want to tell you where I've heard this word.

Today, I was watching a lecture from Mellody Hobson (2006) with the title Color Blind or Color Brave, I decided to (went ahead*) kept on even without understood the title 100%.

A lot of part of this lecture, She said about Color Blind and Color Brave, I think I got the means of them  (I'm not sure) but I want to have concrete 100% if I'm on right way.

So, the question is: Where and How do we use one of them or both?

Let me quote a small part of the lecture: "I'm asking you not to be color blind, but to be color brave"

*Is it correct?

Oh,  as a Swede could not even see the second meaning of the word 'colour blind' until someone pointed it out here. I noticed only the first meaning, the one about approx. 10% of men having difficulties separating the colours red-green. The second meaning, that about skin colour, eluded me totally when I was reading this. I couldn't connect the word 'colour' to 'skin' although I of course know this is a big issue abroad.

Color blind has two meanings. It can mean that a person has a medical condition and  literally cannot see the difference between certain colours; for example, red and green might look the same to them.

Using this idea, some people use color blind to mean that a person chooses not to "see" a person's skin colour, ie. that a person is "not racist". However, people who call themselves "color blind" may be ignoring or denying actual racism around them.

Color brave is a phrase created by Hobson - it is not a common expression - and she uses it to say we should confront issues of racism instead of denying them.

Thank you Peachey, your contribution was very helpful. Now I realize clearly the context of the Hobson lecture.

I guess both of them consist of metaphorical meaning which entails you to think in symbolic way. If we have more context to refer to, it would be easier to speculate.
