I think your current approach is correct because knowing more vocabulary will get you farther than knowing grammar. I would say focus on learning English nouns and verbs, and just slowly touch on grammar. You can do this by watching English movies, listening to English music, or practicing with an English native speaker. This method is what worked for me in my journey of learning Japanese at least. As said above, watching movies/TV & listening to music in the other language can be helpful to pick up how things are said, and how some phrases & idioms are used by native speakers.
On iTalki you can ask people to be language partners so you can practice your speaking (or reading/writing if you prefer to just message).
These things can complement the largely vocabulary & grammar heavy approach used by most school systems.
