I used to be a college admission counselor and all of this is very true.  Students tend to write vague, bland essays about themselves that are not unique.  For a compelling essay through the appropriate use of the English language, you can produce an incredible essay, especially if you are being yourself and articulate at the same time.  Great article for all ESL students!

For me it will be difficult to write an essay while using the formal verbs. I tend to write in the same way as I speak with friends.
