I'm a Chinese native speaker, I'm looking for some English native speaker parters to practice my English or language exchange.
We use wechat more often than Skype or anyother apps in china. I used Skype before, but I don't think it does good work.
I saw that many learners plan to create a chat group on Skype, so I have a question why don't they use wechat? That's a good app,so convenient.
I'm new here, maybe this is not a good topic, and my grammar is not so good, so hope you guys don't mind my simple topic ^^
Personally, as I prefer to have language exchange calls on my laptop (access to online translators, hands free to take notes, more stable), and having tried both desktop versions of WeChat and Skype, I find Skype Windows version to be a better piece of software (for example, with WeChat, a full screen videocall will not show my face in the screen, while Skype does.
But, if Skype doesn't work well where my partner lives, I will of course use WeChat.
There's also an element of privacy, WeChat is a social network tool, sharing pictures and statuses (yes, can be disabled), while Skype is mostly just a communication platform.
I like Skype because I can use it on my laptop, where I have easy access to an online dictionary and Chinese word processing software. Also, Wechat video calls drain my phone battery quickly. For our weekly 1-hour chat, I'd rather use Skype on my laptop. When we want to send each other videos, photos, etc. during the week, we use Wechat.
YouTube (at least, in my experience) is the default choice worldwide for videos. But when I'm finding videos for Chinese friends/students, I use Youku, because YouTube is not (easily) available for them.
Skype (at least, in my experience) is the default choice worldwide for free internet chat. And I'm able to use it easily with Chinese friends/students, too. So there seems no reason not to use the default choice, and it's what I use 99% of the time.
