"Specialist" indicates someone with a high degree of concentration and focus (specialization) in a particular area of knowledge or skill. "Expert" refers to someone with a lot of knowledge or skill in that area. Often specialization and expertise go together, since the more you limit your focus, the more you can increase your depth of knowledge and skill.
