Nathan Gomez
Just starting Spanish. Would you help me translate these sentences?

So I will be going to going on a trip to Mexico in December. I've tried learning Spanish with Duolingo but it hasn't gone well at all. So I want to try the Tim Ferris method of language learning, and the first step is to translate a set of sentences to get a good grasp of the grammar. I know I could plug them into Google translate but I know there are certain things that don't translate that well and I want to be sure that it's correct

The sentences are:

1 The apple is red

2 It is John's apple

3 I give John the apple

4 We give him the apple

5 He gives it to John

6 She gives it to him

7 Is the apple red?

8 The apple is red

9 I must give it to him

10 I want to give it to her

11 I'm going to know tomorrow

12 I can't eat the apple

13 I have eaten the apple

14 I gave him the apple

I know this is a lot, but I would appreciate any help. Thanks Italki!

Hi Esther,

I guess you are referring to the sentence number 5. The sentence does not say APPLE, it just says IT (esto), and by "it" we could be talking about many things such as a book (un libro), that is why I have used LO instead of LA.

He gives IT to John: Él le da esto a John / Se lo da a John

He gives the APPLE to John: Él le da la manzana a John / Se la da a John

@Esther That happens because It hasn't got gender, so it is female an, also male, In spanish we haven't got pronouns like that, so it just depends o the situation, If you are talking about something that's male or female.

Nathan,

I think it would have been better if you had tried to translate them yourself and then ask for corrections or help. In fact, your sentences might not be very different from the ones you have been practicing in Duolingo (I have taken the French "course" in Duolingo).

Anyway, here  you have the sentences translated in Spanish. I hope, it helps!!

(In brackets, there are some pronouns not needed to be specified)

1 The apple is red: La manzana es roja.

2 It is John's apple: Esta manzana es de John / Esta es la manzana de John.

3 I give John the apple: (Yo) Le doy la manzana a John.

4 We give him the apple: (Nosotros) Le damos la manzana.

5 He gives it to John: Él le da esto a John / Se lo da a John.

6 She gives it to him: Ella le da esto a él / Se lo da a él

7 Is the apple red?: ¿La manzana es roja?

8 The apple is red: La manzana es roja

9 I must give it to him: (Yo) Tengo que dárselo a él.

10 I want to give it to her: (Yo) Quiero dárselo a ella / Se lo quiero dar a ella

11 I'm going to know tomorrow : (Yo) Mañana lo sabré.

12 I can't eat the apple: (Yo) No me puedo comer la manzana.

13 I have eaten the apple: (Yo) Me he comido la manzana.

14 I gave him the apple: (Yo) Le di la manzana a él.

Thanks, Raúl, but my question refers to the 'lo' not to it. When it is female in Spanish can you say 'se lo da' as well as 'se la da'? Because, say, you speak about 'el bolso' it would have to be'se lo da', right?
