Did you know that...

In Taiwan, garbage trucks play music to announce its arrival so people know it's time to take out the trash.  One tune that's been played for as long as I can remember is Beethoven's "Fur Elise."  The garbage truck comes at the same time everyday, so if you need to dump your trash, you know to listen for the music around that time.

Please share something about your country that is not commonly known. :)

Here in my place, the garbage trucks honk in rhythm. I find them irritating!

Mr. Zhang, I have never noticed any native English speaker correcting the text of another native English speaker until now:) May I know why you replaced "its" with "their" and "you" with "we"?

Phil,

What would really make Beethoven turn over in his grave is that some children just know "Fur Elise" as "garbage truck music."  But they're just children so I guess we have to forgive them for not knowing any better; they mean no offense.

I bet he never imagined that his music would become such an integral part of life for people on a little island thousands of miles away from him.

I noticed that "Fur Elise" was a typical doorbell chime when I lived in Turkey. As for the garbage trucks, the ones in Krakow (Poland) play opera - at least in the city centre.

(Pleasant opera... not "O Fortuna" or "Ride of the Valkyries" .) :D

I can't remember if "Fur Elise" is an alternative melody for ice-cream vans in Australia - they normally play "Greensleeves", and I'm old enough to remember that as the theme from "Lassie". :)
