How to get the right keyboard for German

As any German speaker knows, there are certain letters that exist in German, such as ß ö ä ü, that do not exist in English. This can make typing in German a bit difficult at times. The way I've been getting around this problem has been to copy and paste these letters from places like Google translate. I also sometimes type ss when I need to use ß and I type oe when I need to use ö.

But having to do so every time is starting to get annoying. Is there a way to get German keys right on my American keyboard? Can I just buy a special keyboard that can switch between German and English keys? Is there some software I can download somewhere?

Please let me know.

You can download a free keyboard that contains those letters, it's called "Lexibar German".

On their site they also have special keyboards for other languages too.

Hiya Taras, if you're using a modern computer you shouldn't have to download any additional software in order to use different keyboards. Modern operating systems mostly tend to have many different keyboard options programmed into them. It depends on what operating system you're using but you should be able to just go to your keyboard settings and select all the different languages you want. You can pick different languages and toggle between them easily when you want to type in different languages. Hope this helps. Cheerio

Taras, nowadays ß is in general not replaced by sz anymore. Best is to follow the Duden and replace it by ss: https://www.duden.de/sprachwissen/rechtschreibregeln/doppel-s-und-scharfes-s.
