I use Genki and I swear by it.
I went from zero Japanese to being able to speak and understand basic Japanese.
It has example roleplays, new vocabulary and grammar points. Then, there are lots of practice examples :)

I understand why you don't like Genki, it's too textbook like class textbook, but I have Genki myself and I learn from it eventually.
On different matter, in case you haven't download any app yet, there are some useful apps like Learning Japanese with Tae Kim which for me really straight forward to read and easy to access because it's all in your phone.

I used Marugoto. I had classes, but I think it could suit self-learners. My teachers also recommended Minna no Nihongo.

Assimil Japanese is simply the best when it comes to learning vocabulary and getting used to the language.
