How mutually intelligible are Spanish and Portuguese really?
Can anyone with experience in both languages answer the question?

It is not mutually intelligible at all. Portuguese speakers understand Spanish better than a native Spanish speaker the Portuguese language. The pronunciation is totally different and the Portuguese language has sounds that Spanish hasn't.
In the written language, it is a little bit more intelligible because both languages share a lot of words.
In this video of youtube it is better explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82FgZEOn89k
