How long before you feel fluent?

Hi everyone!

How long do you usually study a language before you feel fluent? In my case with Spanish I learned it little by little over a period of a few years and I would say maybe by the 4th year after having classes and using the language at work I felt competent to be able to manage conversations with people. I am sure many of you who are hard workers have felt fluent before 4 years maybe it only took you a year or two in your target language.

Also, if you are trying to better your English, be sure to check my availability and schedule a lesson. I look forward to working with you!

It really does depend on how intense your usage is.  In my case, I learned French in the Peace Corps in about 2 years because of the need to only use it every day teaching.  But now learning Mandarin, it is more of a hobby, and I don't use it intensely for work even though I live in China.  I have been at it for 4 years, and like you am just starting to feel comfortable in everyday situations.

It depends on how passionate you are about that language and what is your purpose to learn the language so quickly. And i agree with you, when it comes to language fluency, we have to try and communicate in that language as much as possible.

Based on my experience for learning english, it took me 3 years for being able using english properly in speaking, writing, and conversations.

You can learn a language in 3 months.  The basics, that is.

It depends if you are immersed in the culture or not.  I learnt Spanish in 3 months - and did not see another English speaker most of that time.  It was quite hectic!!!

Previous comments explained it is not linked to time (years) but effective study and practice (frequency and intensity). It really depends from the language(s) you come from and the language you go to.

However an interesting milestone Iwant to highlight is when you dream in the targeted language.
