What would you do if you were in a situation like that ? Hi, today I would like to hear your opinion on something really important to me. I will try to go straight to the point. I have been working at the same company for about 6 years. It’s been a while since I started thinking about quitting my job. Working there is not exciting or challenging anymore. Plus my boss has not been performing well. We (employees) are much more worried about the company than he is. Which is very frustrating and discouraging. I have talked to him about it, but he didn’t do /suggest anything. So in december I opened my own business, but I haven't quit my job. I'm doing pretty well, but I don’t know if it’s time to quit my job and focus on my own thing. Here is my question for you: What would you do if you were in a situation like that ?

I would do one old but useful thing: divide sheet of paper on two parts and write down good and bad possible consequences of each decision. After that, I suppose, it would be clearer what to do.

Don't do anything, at least for the moment.

In other words, don't rush to make an important decision.

First, poor managers are often terminated because it takes some time for the senior managers or the owners to realize that the manager is underperforming. With a new manager, your job may be more satisfactory.

Second, wait to see how well your private business does.
If you enjoy the work and if your business' income is sufficient to support you (or equal to your job's income), then you could consider quitting your unsatisfactory job.

One rule of thumb is to never leave a job until you have another job to go to (this will help you to avoid being without an income for an extended period of time).

I listen to the Jordan Harbinger podcast and on their Friday advice minisode they get this question a lot. The answer is always, quit your job *only* when you gain so much from your side gig that keeping your old job is an obstacle to gaining more. Another way to say this is to do it when you are sure that you can give up that safe, reliable paycheck and not regret it.

If your side jig is still not working at full speed, there's always the option of getting a job at another company where you can have less limitations.

I think you need to take into account many other factors around. Do you have financial support from your family? Are they approve your change? If yes, you should do it. In another case, you need to take into account other aspects. Do you have free money that allows you to live until your business starts to bring enough money? If the answer is no, you need to wait and work at your old place until your business will grow. This is my opinion, feel free to contact me if you want to discuss your problem .
