How prepositions are counted at IELTS exam, for example, in front of -1 word or 3 words?

'In front of' is counted as three words: in + front + of = 3.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

If you are talking about the maximum number of words in the writing task, a preposition counts as one separate word. It's not "added" to its object.
