TIP OF THE DAY 3 - How to find a language partner?!

What`s up! Sed here, again!

Today's tip of the day is - How to find a language partner and the reasons why nobody wants to be your language partner.

1. Take a look at your profile page! You need a profile picture where we can see your actual face and if you can, please write your name. Write a longer description about yourself, that will save you a huge amount of response time. This is the very first thing that the other person sees and if he/she sees your profile empty, guess what will happen? NOTHING!

2. Texting - as I mentioned before many conversations end with -hi - hi, -how are you, -fine, and you?, -I need help, can you help? Game Over. When you are writing a message to someone think about it like you are writing a job CV. You do not write in your CV - "I need a job", right? Write in details, who you are, what do you like, what do you do, at what times are you free for conversation, basically answer every question that you think the other person will need to know. Do not fall in the thinking that the person will ask you these things if they are interested. No one has a "time" even if they are!

3. Do your homework - Study the language by yourself so you can find things that you do not understand or simply to know what are your weak sides. Then you can share that with your partner, for example, you can say, hey I am working on my pronunciation and I am struggling to say the words like Tuesday, Thursday, Trouble, do you think you can help me? Be specific with your questions.

A language partner is someone who can help you with a little push or motivates you or a friend that you can talk to regularly. But it is not a person who will fix your relationship with the language.

Till next time, fellas!

Thanks for sharing these tips Sed! I think we are impatient with this option of partner finding like we are impatient with any other thing in life. People want language partner and they want it now but there are lots of difficulty with finding one, there is language barriers, cultural and religious barriers and even there is time zone barrier. Personally I have found out that if I want to find a serious language partner I should be serious about it and start from myself (as Mahatma Gandhi says be the change you wish to see in the world) if I am serious enough in finding committed partners I should regularly and persistently participate in discussion write in notebook entry and be active. I think first and foremost part of finding a partner is to be a partner!

The main problem with language sites is that most people don't want to learn the language as much as you do. Especially when it comes to languages such as Russian. Most people come in here to fool around . I also used to think how cool - you can Skype with native English speakers , but it was not there. All interested people have already been sorted out

A couple of days ago, I wrote a similar discussion which also explains the difficulties of finding a language partner here on italki: https://www.italki.com/discussion/205038;.
