Should users who start discussions reply to comments? How important is it to you that users who start a discussion reply to comments? Should they reply to every single comment or thank in general? Is it ok, if they only upvote comments? Does it depend on the kind of discussion (e.g. general discussion, language partner request, asking for advice)?

@Quasimodo

I strongly disagree with you because I don't like downvoting others just because I don't agree with their opinion. So, even now, I'm not giving you a downvote. I'd prefer if downvotes weren't anonymous. If you could see who up- or downvoted (like in Facebook), it'd be better in my opinion. Because there are some people who downvote everything by certain users, just because they personally dislike them and not because they wrote anything offensive or stupid.

I don't think that expressing disagreement and saying something "not nice " are the same things so bringing here quotes from The Bible and Quran irrelevant and provoking a religious dispute which is prohibited by Italki law.

To me, it doesn't matter if they respond or not. I think sharing ideas is the most important :)

When I read a discussion or a comment:
-  I always give everyone an upvote... why not?
-  if I disagree, I'll give a thumbs up just because the person made the effort to comment
-  if I disagree, I won't give a thumbs down
-  if I disagree, I'll say so, in writing, or I'll just keep my comments to myself

Speak a good word or remain silent - Prophet Mohammed
If you have nothing good to say, say nothing -  English saying... anonymous
If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all. - The Bible

PS
I upvoted everyone who didn't have an upvote (and it cost me nothing to do it... :)

Hi Miriam,

It's nice if they'd reply, upvote or thank everyone in a single message, but for all those example discussions it's not important. Discussions where people request or require updating with information is an exception, but enticement doesn't require rules nor exceptions.

I always like to start my comments or replies with a salutation to the Original Poster, that's usually the sole kind of formality I consider, but respect should never be formal- and standardized, because it suffices in personal morality. If I start a discussion I'd like some insightful answers too and it's sensible not to expect any. On the other end, it should be expected that people offer more than answering an inquiry, which potentially attracts conversation. I feel people aren't really open to discuss, if they're not open to converse. To me that openness is an actual discussion, and a debate is really distinctive, that openness requires seriousness and sincerity as well, and conviction the least.
