A related question would be what made America powerful.

With Britain it is easier maybe. If you read books published 100 years ago, the world was seen then form colonial perspective. The country who would take more colonies was expected to rule the world.

E.g. I once read a book about Tunisia by some Englishman. He was all pro-Arab and against the French. Why? His point was that French don't know how to colonize. They, Englishmen would run Tunisia better, he believed! Also he thought Britain shouldn't let France take Tunisia because Tunisia could be useful in the struggle for Africa.
Soon there would be no colonies, French, English or any.

I personally think that Britain is still that great empire, ever better at these days. They are so powerful and a well developed society. But if you look at Britain from the American perspective, you will see them tiny, with no self-confidence and small, not because they are like that but because you are American and because you are American, even the best empire looks weak. But if you look at Britain from any other European country, you will see to one of the best empires in the world.
