If the context is about a particular man, then yes it's okay...
Example: "Reality is the last acceptable thing for the man so he shuts himself at home." - "the man" here is a particular man.
if it's about humanity as a whole, then maybe settle for "a man" -- or "men"...
Example: "We don't easily accept failure, suffering; sometimes reality is the last thing acceptable for a man in pain.
