Do Russian women drive cars in the big cities? I visited St. Petersburg and say maybe only 3 out of 1000 drivers were women. It seemed like driving was a very masculine activity-- very macho. It almost seemed like there was a women's union and they had bargained not to drive in exchange for some concession from men, but I do not know what.

I used the word "macho" only from the Mexican sense. I am unfamiliar with any other sense. Here in the US it is recognized as describing a salient and pervasive part of Mexican male culture. I guess you could describe it as male chauvinism. While most non-Mexicans do not buy into it to the degree that the Mexicans do, it is still good to be aware of it because you can get into some dangerous situations with Mexican men if you are not aware that they will respond differently in certain situations than anyone else will. It sounds like it does not have the horrible connotations here that it has in europe, but it still is not always fully approved of.
The meaning I meant to convey here was: very much of an aggressive, male type of activity. The odd thing was that it seemed normal to them. They were routinely doing things there that would have resulted in a "road rage" response here in the US.

i ve never thought of driving as a "macho" activity, but i guess this word has not the same meaning in american..why did you add this word in american english. in spanish is full of horrible connotations. Here in European Spanish is totally out of use even in the worst social settings!

You are right, I saw the same thing in Moscow. I think that most families have one car and the man gets to drive it, whilst the women take public transport,

This world is for men... Here exists even the conception of "women's manner of driving" to laugh at. But women commit less accidents then men according to statistics.
