To add to Dave’s spot-on comments, I’ll just mention “Colloquial Cantonese”, which is good for beginners, and the publishers (Routledge) offer all the audio for free on their website. The book is a bit pricey, but you could probably find a PDF online with relative ease. It uses mainly romanization (Yale, but with 6 tones, not 7. My teachers all speak with 6 tones — I’ve no idea where you can still hear 7 tones these days). The language is fairly useful, although, given the somewhat undocumented nature of the language, you'll want to have some authentic materials (try YouTube) and a teacher as well. Oh, yeah, I'm sure you'll find some good conversation partners too, as long as you keep at it.
