It's better not to use Pinyin to write when studying Chinese From my point of view, Pinyin is just used for pronouniciation.
I don't think it's a good way for Chinese begginner to write in Pinyin even though he can not recognize Chinese Characters yet.

It's not only difficult for natives to recognize them, but also means slow improvements for those Chinese learners.

Remember one point: It's very difficult for Chinese natives to recognize pinyins of long sentences.

Now that you know the pinyin for some certain word, why not find a Chinese input method software then try to type Chinese characters?

I recomend Microsoft Pinyin Inpu Method, or 搜狗拼音输入法(It's not an advertisement, because I find it useful. Microsoft and 搜狗 doesn't pay me anything for that, :P).

Just a suggestion. Pinyin is not a language, I think. Just like that no man use English phonetic symbol to write, doesn't it?

Although Chinese teachers teach pupils in that way, actually it is not a right and proper way.

That's my opinion.

U think chinese ...

for many foreigners its easier at the beginning to know some pinyin ... we are used to long sentences ...
a mixture is ok

why should a traveller learn characters?

I learned my chinese on the road ... i wrote my own pinyin like i heard it,than learned pinyin, than characters ... spoken chinese is the most important, not written

and even if you know how to write a tonguetwister like shi shi shi shi and so on ... what sence does it make if u know the characters and not the tone???

And last but not least:There is not one way to learn a language, there are many

Everybody is different :-) Mostly :-))

you are so right
i remember the first time we attend a chinese class and found that there is no pinyin under characters we asked ourselves how could we read it but we began to read and try ,now we can read and write chinese  without pinyin (except the new words we had to write it's pronounciation so that  we will be able to memorize it  but once we know it we remove the pinyin )

I agree, only learning to write in pinyin is lame.  If you don't at least understand how to read characters then you are illiterate in Chinese.  I have to confess a weakness though, that microsoft pinyin input is so easy to use that I have completely forgotten how to write characters. Unless you are in China there just aren't very many situations where you have to write characters.  I have to go back and learn to write by hand all over again!

對初學者而言:

拼音是很重要的。

學漢語方法
1)先學拼音
后慢慢(一個一個地)認漢字。

拼音和漢字不能分開的。

如果你標出聲調我們仍然能認出拼音。

我吃完fan4了. 》》》》wo3 chi wan2 fan4 le
這樣也很好了解。
